CONSTELLATIONS by Nick Payne
Gonzaga University

How can beekeeping, brain cancer, and the impossibility of licking your elbow move us to question the nature of love and the universe? Constellations is a two-person play that weaves together the complexities of quantum physics with the intimacies of human relationship. Using a non-linear and repetitive structure, it finds infinite possibilities in the remarkably unremarkable love story of Marianne and Roland. Arresting, mind-bending, and exquisitely tender, the play unites science and theatre in a confrontation of their biggest question: what does it mean to be alive?

Constellations was presented as a part of Gonzaga University's Second Stage season. The show featured an all-student cast, as well as an all-student creative team. It was a Splash production, meaning that six actors were cast for the two roles and were "splashed" together to perform in random pairs for each show night. The show received Meritorious Achievement Awards for Costume Design, Stage Management, and ASL Choreography & Coaching from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.
